Petrology and Mineralogy Excursion in the Merangin Jambi Geopark Area The atmosphere at the Merangin Jambi Geopark

Viewpoint seemed more crowded than usual, when dozens of students from the Geological Engineering and Geophysical Engineering Departments of the University of Jambi held a field excursion for two consecutive days (April 24-25, 2025).
This activity is part of the practical learning of the Petrology and Mineralogy courses, which aims to hone the ability to observe and analyze directly the geological conditions in the field.

Accompanied by lecturer Ir. Hari Wiki Utama, S.T., M.Eng, Magdalena Ritonga, S.T., M.T., Anggi Deliana Siregar, S.T., Μ.Τ., Maulina Tanjung, M.Si, Febiyora Chandra Kirana, S.T., M.T , BP Geopark Merangin Jambi Eko Wahyudi, Ilham Yandra, field assistants and Pokdarwis Bedeng Rejo Village, the students conducted observations of various rock formations, mineral types, geological structures, and the geological history of the area.

They also recorded important parameters such as terrain orientation, rock layer position, formation age and rocks.
This excursion is important to introduce students to the reality in the field. Not only theory, they must be able to read the 'story' stored in the rocks and enrich academic insight, here it is very complete in terms of rocks, there are igneous rocks, metamorphic rocks, sedimentary rocks and pyroclastic rocks. In addition to being unique, this location is also very representative because it represents all the rocks that exist,” said Ir. Hari Wiki Utama, S.T., M.Eng, the excursion supervisor”.

By bringing home field notes and rock samples, participants are expected to be able to compile in-depth scientific reports, while fostering a love for the earth and the geological processes that have shaped it over millions of years.
