KADAM TRADITIONAL DANCE

The legend of Kadam Dance from Muara Madras Jangkat Village was designated as an Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017. Kadam dance originally contained Pencak Silat Siamang movements in its journey combined with Silat Tiger moves and Eagle moves. The combination of the 3 (three) Pencak Silat moves is the Kadam Dance movement. Kadam dance serves to attract crowds at any event in the village. According to the community, Kadam Dance is performed to scare residents, especially children, so that they are not naughty and obedient to their parents. Kadam is analogous to the tiger guarding the village of Madras who wants to eat anyone who violates the rules in the village. Such as breaking the rule of not leaving the village on the 10 days of Eid al-Fitr. For anyone who violates the rules, the tiger will be eaten or disaster will befall.
Kadam Dance or Silat Kadam is an ancestral cultural heritage from hundreds of years ago until now it is maintained from generation to generation. The current era of Kadam Dance is not only played by fighters but also by dancers from various dance studios. Kadam is performed using a mask made of areca fronds that resembles a human face, using necklace accessories in the form of garden products of residents in Madras such as eggplant, chili peppers and others. Costumes are made of black enau palm fiber made in such a way as to resemble clothes that cover the whole body. In addition, Kadam dance also uses sword property in performing movements in the dance. Kadam dance is played with attractive percussion music accompaniment of Gendang Dap and Gong.
