Merangin, 18 May 2024

The act of vandalism allegedly carried out by a group of students at Muara Karing Waterfall a few weeks ago is unacceptable. Apart from ruining the view, it has happened at one of the objects in the Merangin Jambi Geopark.

It was a distinctive concern of the General Manager of Merangin Jambi Geopark, Mr. Dr. Agus, during the meeting with the team at the Secretariat of the Merangin Jambi UNESCO Global Geopark Management Body (MJUGGp). On Saturday, 18 May, with the Management Body team, Mr. Dr Agus, assisted by the Air Batu River activists, immediately went to the location.

Armed with a comb, brush, and paint cleaning fluid, the General Manager cleaned up the graffiti on the rocks at the waterfall. Not only that, the team also cleaned up plastic waste scattered near the location.

"We strongly condemn this act of vandalism, especially as this is one of our iconic locations in the Merangin Jambi Geopark. We urge visitors and managers to work together to protect this object because this is world heritage for our future children and grandchildren," said the General Manager.

When leaving the location, the team also took the time to clean up the graffiti on the asphalt and the Muara Karing entrance gate. The team also collected plastic waste around the location.
